Voddler- Lights out! It’s mobile movie night!

Voddler’s Lumia-app, with the unique feature Voddler Movie Night, is now available on all Nokia Lumia phones in Scandinavia and in Spain, featured as one of Nokia’s few exclusive Collection-apps. The project has given Nokia a high profile, premium app that is used to market their phone and Voddler gets another channel where they can reach new and old customers.

The Voddler Movie Night app has helped to establish the company in Spain and to maintain their position as market leading in Scandinavia.

Voddler is the market leading online film service in Scandinavia. Since the start in 2010 more than 1.5 million users have signed up to view high quality streaming of movies and TV series. The company carries over 5000 titles from companies such as Warner Bros, Disney and Universal. Voddler is currently available in Scandinavia and Spain.

Background

When Voddler wanted apps for Symbian and Meego, Nokia pointed them in our direction. Meego was a new platform at the time and Jayway’s strong focus on competence means that we are usually one of the few companies that are up to date with the latest in cutting edge technology. The projects were a success so when Voddler was to develop a new version for Windows Phone 7, they contacted us. This time the job description was to create a premium app with unique features, that previous Voddler apps did not have and which was going to be used in the marketing of Nokia’s new Lumia phone.

Our Solution

An app that makes your voice sound like Bugs Bunny? Or perhaps one that turns your phone into a James Bond-style flying vehicle? There are a lot of options if your main goal is to create something unique. Not all of them are good and not all of them are realistic. Our job, apart from development, was to take part in the concept development and to assess what was doable within the budget frame without compromising the standard of quality and innovation that is needed for a high profile premium app. In the end the decision was to focus on the social aspects of watching movies and to create a solution that allows you to schedule and coordinate viewings with your friends and to chat and review the movies while watching them on your mobile phone. 

The new Voddler app should combine the video watching capacity of a smartphone with the phone’s fundamental communication capability.
