GM focuses on sustainable rubber production

GM has announced that they are committing their sourcing efforts to source solely natural rubber in the production of it’s tires.

This movement comes as a means to decrease deforestation and improve human and labor rights amongst its supply base. GM has taken the approach of supplier development and engagement to increase sustainable rubber production.

Steve Kiefer, senior VP of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, remarked “We want to encourage affordable, safer and cleaner options for our customers that drive value to both our organization and the communities in which we work.”

GM believes that their refocus on more responsible and strategic sourcing operations can have large reaching, positive, environmental and societal impact. The three main points that they see as areas in which their efforts can result in beneficial impact are:

1. Wildlife and forest preservation and restoration.

2. Improved yield for natural rubber farmers, typically small businesses

3. Mitigating business and supply chain risks.

The corporation sees themselves as a an advocate in the journey towards supply chain transparency and traceability for automotive products, including rubber, and has encouraged “[…] other automakers and suppliers to join in the effort to accelerate progress.”
