Investors are investing in Smarter, Sustainable Supply Chains

Agriculture is one of the most pivotal industries to the continuance of life, as we know on Earth, but simultaneously has created a chasm in the earth’s natural resources, as it is one of the most depleting industries for people and planet alike.

“Globally, agriculture employs over 1 billion people, many of whom are food insecure; consumes 70 percent of our freshwater; and is estimated to contribute nearly a fifth of total global carbon emissions” (DiMascio 2017).

Statistics with this kind of shock value is the exact reason why organizations globally are getting serious about the sustainability of their production life cycle. Consumers and investors have placed high demands on the agricultural industry to rethink value, as they know it, and implement strategies to counteract their inevitable impact on society.

A recent article by GreenBiz, has suggested that investors have become a major cultivator or catalyst for global business supply chain sustainability. Knowing the low-resilience of the agricultural industry in regards to risk management, investors are beginning to invest in more ‘sustainable’ brands knowing that these are the long-term investments that will not only enhance profit, but also people and planet.

“As sustainable sourcing strategies and supply chain transparency become essential practices for the food and beverage industry, investors seek to examine the agricultural supply chain risks and corporate responses more deeply in order to make informed investment decisions” (Dimascio 2017).

These are the examples of conscientious business decisions that prove everyone (corporation, consumer and investors) is a stakeholder in the sustainability of our future.
