Levi Strauss & Co. sets “new aggressive targets” for Climate Action Strategy

Brand value and supply chain management have become synonymous in the age of information, transparency and a 24-hour news feed.

For this reason, organizations are constantly jockeying to have state-of-the-art supply chain sustainability initiatives. Sustainability isn’t just a thing of marketing glamour in 2018, the stakeholders want it, and their customers demand it.

Levi Strauss & Co. has released a statement earlier this week, rededicating their supply chain activities to achieving “aggressive targets”.

The initiative comes at a time where supply chain sustainability, and the governance of climate/environmental related influencers, are at an all-time high for necessity.

Levi’s strategy states that they have set “new aggressive targets for reducing carbon emissions across its owned-and-operated facilities and global supply chain by 2025.”

Their emissions reductions will be championed by working to reach targets such as:

  • 100% renewable electricity in company-owned facilities
  • 90% reduction of GHG emissions in owned and operated factories
  • 40% reduction of GHG emissions in supply chain by collaborating with key suppliers (Berman 2018)

Whilst this statement released by Levi Strauss & Co. sets a positive example for the risk-adverse global apparel industry, it also reinforces the complexity/difficulties involved in achieving corporate sustainability goals.

Impacting environmental data in their supply chain activities isn’t solely reliant upon directly owned and managed facilities. Levi’s will have to work hard to leverage their key supplier organizations, and most likely deploy development programs, trainings, increased auditing and performance evaluations to ensure they can create a united front to reach their targets of a 40% reduction of GHG emissions in supply chain activities.
