Marks and Spencer’s lays out new Sustainability plan.

Marks & Spencer’s is a British headquarted multinational retailer that prides itself on providing it’s customers with quality products that are manufactured, delivered and retailed with traceability and transparency in mind.

Product life cycle is a portion of the value chain Marks and Spencer’s has worked on for years at this point.

The release of a new sustainability plan proves that they are a business, and supply chain, hell-bent on reaching and achieving sustainable business development at all levels of their value chain.

In an article from Horticulture Week it was stated that Marks and Spencer’s plans to “help 10 million people live happier, healthier lives and convert M&S into a zero-waste business

Amongst some of the daring initiatives includes:

  • Making it’s products, business model and supply chain zero-waste
  • Ensuring sourced materials are coming from solely sustainable sources by year 2022
  • Reducing GHG emissions from it’s supply chain by 13.3 million tonnes by 2030 (Horticulture Week 2017)

It seems clear that the corporation plans on leveraging not only it’s employees and production as a means of sustainable action, but also it’s 200,000+ shareholders. Plan A is the first step of the sustainability plan that contains the actions of the first 10 years of the corporations activities and strategies.

As stated by the chair of the Plan A advisory board Jonathon Porritt, "It's so important that M&S, one of the world's most trusted and well-loved companies, keeps raising the bar on what it means to be a sustainable retailer”.

The trends are pointing towards sustainable action. Marks & Spencer’s plans on giving themselves a leg up on the competition by proving that their business can do good, while making profit.
