UTSTÄLLNINGSBESKRIVNING I KORTHET:

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Roberto De Pol was born in Mannheim (Germany) in 1977.

He mainly lives and works in a small town in the Dolomits area, Pozzale di Cadore. His works appear formally as assemblages of materials taken from everyday life. Often triggered by rudimentary mechanical systems that – thanks to reconstructions and implementations - have ambiguous forms, his installations have an architectural, sculptural, and "useless machines" identity. The poetry that underlies in his research is often linked to issues like precariousness, interference and modification of the space perception.

He recently (2013) took solo shows in Venice (Galleria Michela Rizzo) and Trento (Upload Project). In 2011 he was selected to participate at the prestigious artists in residence program at the Fondazione Antonio Ratti (Como) -visiting professor Susan Hiller - and in 2010 he was selected for the artists studios program by the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice. He participated in numerous group exhibitions in Italy and abroad such as “Be as doves and wise as serpents” curated by M. Minuz (Pordenone and Treviso); “Au lit avec mon artists” curated by S. Brivois in Paris; “Future landscape”, curated by R. Caldura in Venice; “The Private Eye: a Prologue ”, curated by N. Borriaud, Museum of Modern Art in Ljiubijana. In 2014 he started working on Nowhere In Particular, a long term project which will take him and his installations to travel around Italy and Europe.

ABOUTE NOWHERE IN PARTICULAR:

Statement – the artist’s practice

Recently Roberto De Pol (Pozzale di Cadore, Italy, 1977) started thinking his work per groups: “the rain”, “the curtain”, “the turntables”, “the televisions” and so on. Each time he has to install a piece, he finds himself inevitably influenced by the context, by the human relationships he establishes, by the space and the materials he has on his disposal. During the working process his intention is always to insert a new variable within the exhibition space with the attempt to underline certain dynamics: even for this reason the titles of his works are actually the lists of all the things or elements (even people) which are part of the piece and of its process. These elements, in short, tell the story of the piece.

Nowhere in Particular

Starting from these premises he decided to experiment at a higher level his method and his approach to art and space by subjecting his works to a continuous rhythm of installations and de-installations: what does installing, taking down, documenting and creating a specific work of art outside institutional contexts mean? Which are other ideal places for art? And so, where art needs to be seen? Nowhere in Particular.

“This research – he says - allows me to test to a greater extent the unpredictability, the mobility and the fluidity within the working process. I often forget the arts venues and literally try to get into homes, shops and public spaces with my installations: I prefer to empower people and to borrow their objects - even if only for few hours or minutes to set up my sculpture / installation -, to experiment ways of relating to communities and locations which would be totally different from the ones I’ve experienced until now”.

The goal is then to experiment Nowhere In Particular in both - improvised and scheduled - locations as well as in art and non-art places.

After testing this method during 2013, the artist decided to turn it into a long term project. Nowhere In Particular first step was in Osnabrück (Germany) at the BartnikProjectRoom and at the StadtGalerie Cafe: every piece he installed was the result of conversations, meetings and encounters he had during his stay. In each case he explains his practice, his modalities, directions and needs, and when people is open to collaboration, he asks to borrow for an agreed period the things he needs for his works: in this way art and non-art public is involved in the experience of creating a work - and the concept of authorship is challenged.

How the project works

Nowhere in particular is a journey: a residency (10 to 20 days minimum) gives the artist the opportunity to create a “journey inside the journey” which foresees a total liberty of itinerary and travel. Works can be installed in many places, in the stops during the artist’s trip towards his final destination, in the suburbs, in shops, in private houses and of course in more institutional places.

Nowhere In Particular not necessarily moves in art devoted places, but on the other side, the artist is interested in experimenting both situations, especially when this could be done in the same city or area.

Another issue is the duration: installations can be put up and down just for half an hour (this happens in non-art places especially) or for months. In any case the entire process - interactions with people included - is photo and video documented by the artist. From the practical point of view, he only takes with him few basic tools - like drill, hammer, pliers: anything else he needs comes from the interactions.
