L´Oréal Professionnel for Kenzo AW14
It’s only just 7 a.m., and already it’s scorching hot backstage at the Kenzo show. Excitement is at an all-time high, as the man in charge of the scenography is none other than David Lynch himself. Imagine the scene: a mysterious drive-in parking lot type set, plunged into darkness, a disturbing sculpture, a set of movable mirrors, and ushers distributing roasted pralines and designer Kenzo coffee all against sixties background music, featuring artists like the Beach Boys and Elvis Presley. An obvious partnership for the designers, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, who are looking for a less grungy and more sophisticated fashion, playing with contrasts and volumes. The coats are particularly accentuated, with exaggeratedly high waists and what look like exploded collars. Skirts and trousers that seem carved out of wood, or metal. Padded suits. As for the fox furs, their colors are evocative of Lynch heroines: lemon for Lula in Wild at Heart, lilac for Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks and purple for Dorothy Vallens in Blue Velvet.

The inspiration for this look? “It comes from my favorite David Lynch movie: Twin Peaks,” says Anthony Turner with a smile that speaks volumes about his mood. “With this collection, Carol and Humberto have turned a corner in their designs by giving priority to more sophisticated, carefully considered silhouettes, having much in common with David Lynch’s women,” says the chief hairstylist. And this is characterized bya faux ponytail, in the best sense of the word.
