The best book of the year 2017 from Lithuania Siberian Haiku visits Göteborg Book Fair

“Siberian Haiku“− is the first book by two young authors Jurga Vilė and Lina Itagaki.

This graphic novel immediately took over the interest of readers and critics because of its extraordinary and dynamic presentation and story line.

The book is in its third edition and has already received main book awards in Lithuania, including a prize for the most artistic book, the best book of the year and the best illustrations for children book by IBBY Lithuania 2017.

Based on a true story - the Jurga Vile’s father’s biography - “Siberian Haiku” dives beneath the difficult realm of holocaust and Soviet regime seeing it in a subtle, soft and emotional way.

This graphic novel becomes one of the first attempts to represent the condition of the displaced child rather than to shock and dismay readers with the horrors accompanied by deportation. However, the enforced relocation of people is dressed in the costume of adventure, thus the plot is fantastical, fairytale-esque -an ordeal or an obstacle that must be overcome.

“Siberian Haiku”, by presenting a single person’s perspective, both paints the painful experience with the naïveté of a child and defines it as an historical occurrence, making it very accessible and relatable and thus, emotive. Though, the novel is meant for teenagers, the content is also suitable for adults.

The events presenting “Siberian Haiku” at the book fair will be held on 29th September, 13:00 at Lo1300.9 auditorium. There will be a workshop “Paper Starks” at 14:00 and talk on illustration at 16:00 at EUNIC stand C02:20.

In the seminar Jurga Vile (text) and Lina Itagaki(illustration) will discuss about the importance of images in storytelling and how the graphic novels have an impact on literary techniques on society in general.

Organized by the Lithuanian Cultural Attache in Sweden, supported by Lithuanian Cultural institute. The book is published by “Aukso žuvys” publishing house www.auksozuvys.lt
