9 Reasons Spunbond is the Supermaterial of Construction

Spunbond is one of the most versatile nonwoven industry textiles used in construction materials since its properties can be adapted so dramatically depending on its application. You find spunbond in walls, roofs and flooring in all modern buildings. Here are nine reasons to why it’s so widely used.

1. Inorganic
Spunbond is a nonwoven made from thin plastic fibres making it inorganic, durable and mold-proof for construction.

2. Non-stick
Spunbond is often used as a coat on for example asphalted roofing products so that different layers of products won't stick together.

3. UV resistance
Construction materials used in roofing are exposed to UV rays that speed up deterioration. Spunbond can be designed to withstand higher amounts of UV rays in order to maximize the life span.

4. Flame resistant
By adding flame retardants to spunbond you can also make the construction material less flammable. This is often applied in nonwovens that are used in walls.

5. Air permeability
By coating the spunbond or making it thicker or denser, it is possible to control the amount of air passing through the material. When coating the material air permeability is totally eliminated, making it ideal for wind barriers for roofs and walls. When instead adding thickness to the material air permeability is lowered.

6. Moisture resistance
As inorganic material made out of different plastic fibres, spunbond is by nature hydrophobic which means it does not absorb liquids.

Moisture permeability can be controlled with different coatings or by adding fibres upon manufacturing. It is possible to totally block moisture making it great for moisture barriers in bathrooms or for outdoor water barriers.

7. Absorption
Even if spunbond by nature doesn’t absorb water, it is possible to add other materials to add absorptions properties.

8. Heat resistance
Many construction materials must be able to withstand high temperatures or a high variety of temperatures – such as construction materials for roofs. The heat resistance of spunbond can be controlled and adjusted for different types of construction materials.

9. Flexible & Versatile
As you probably have figured out, spunbond is a truly versatile nonwoven contruction material. All these different properties can be changed, adjusted and combined, making spunbond a valuable material in all types of construction materials.

A world of nonwoven industry textiles

At Scandinavian Nonwoven, we have a long history of working with and offering amazing nonwoven materials to our many customers in the manufacturing industry in northern Europe.
We offer Scandinavia’s largest range of nonwoven materials, and in many cases help our customers develop customized materials suited to their specific needs.

The company was founded in 1982 by two Swedes who by then had already been working with nonwoven for 20 years. They recognized the opportunities that this amazing material has to offer and wanted to help customers seize these opportunities. In-depth knowledge about the material and a close relationship with our customers have been important to us right from the start.

Since then, many industries have realized the advantages offered by the amazing flexible nonwoven.
