New York City Ranked the World’s Most Popular City

New York City is the world’s most popular city according to The Metropolitan Report presented by Metro International and business intelligence firm United Minds. London and Paris are ranked second and third.

Although regional differences exist, the ranking is strikingly similar across the world, and New York City ranks first in 14 out of the 30 cities surveyed on six continents. This could be the result of an emerging urban mindset shared by city dwellers from all corners of the world. The mindset, influenced by urban living, transcends cultural differences and geographical borders and is defined by an appreciation of diversity, culture and the city living.

-          New York City epitomizes what the city is all about – the sense of freedom, the diversity of people, the shopping and vibrant social milieus. This is why city dwellers rank the Big Apple above all other cities, says Paul Alarcón, Research Director at United Minds.

The ranking of the world’s most popular city differs greatly from the ”livable cities” indexes presented by The Economist Intelligence Unit and the lifestyle magazine Monocle. The Economist ranks Vancouver the world’s most livable city, whereas Helsinki is at the top of Monocle’s list. What separates them from the ranking in The Metropolitan Report is that neither of them is based on the actual opinions of people, but on other indicators such as healthcare facilities and infrastructure.

-          The list of the world’s most popular cities in The Metropolitan Report is not a ranking of the most livable cities, but a list of the cities people most of all would like to live in. It therefore gives a new perspective on what we consider important for a city to be attractive. The opportunities that cities provide drive urbanization, says Wilf Maunoir, Global Research Director, Metro International.
