Volunteer blog: First week at PPG by Marina Milojkovic

My name is Marina and I am 21 years old. I’ve always wanted to work with people, and one of my dreams has been to go to an organization and help, in one way or another.

I first came in contact with PPG around one year ago, at the office in Stockholm, were I’m also from. When I met Sofia, Lina and Frida for the first time, just the way they talked about the project, that they always prioritize the children and their needs, the way they work, the purpose with the project, I could just feel that this was the perfect project for me.

This is my first week being an intern at PPG here in Langa and since the first day I’ve felt so welcomed by everyone here. During my first day I looked through evaluations that some parents to the children had written. Many of them wrote that they could see the different on their children, being happier, gaining more self-esteem and that it keeps them of the streets.

During this day I also met the participants and two of the staff members, Fundiswa and Ntombi at Play on Wheels. When I said hello to everyone, Unathi, one of the participants, he just came to me smiling and gave me a hug.

I also got to be part of their circle time. They were singing and played some instruments. I could really see how much Fundiswa and Ntombi love each one of them.

On my second day at PPG, Nicky, a staff member at below 8 invited me to say hello to all the children in her class. When I stepped into the classroom the children started to sing and they threw kisses in the air and when I left the classroom I had a bunch of drawings in my hands. I felt so warm and I had so much energy when I left the room. So, if you ever feel sad or angry, just go into this classroom and you will feel so much better. Just like during the circle time with PoW, I just couldn’t stop smiling!

Being here, my motivation has only increased and I look forward to continuing this experience. It just feels so good to be here.
