Guest blog: One year later by Peter Hesslin

Peter Hesslin from DHL Freight Sweden visited Project Playground for the second time last week. Read his own story about his time and expriences with us:

I remember leaving Project Playground in Langa in early November 2013 with that feeling that I just have to return and now I am back. I arrived on Monday last week (October 13th) and went straight from the airport to the center. The feeling I felt when arriving was that of meeting family, a warm welcome from staff as well as the children and young adults who have Project Playground as their second home.

I am so amazed over the progress I see amongst the Play on Wheels class, it is truly remarkable. Young children who have learnt to walk, eat by themselves and speak in the last 12 months. The patience amongst the staff who treat these children as they would be their own, with love and respect.

When leaving last year the walls around the grounds were being painted, seeing the finished product is great, it makes the whole place look so much more welcoming and children friendly. Seeing the room which has been designed in the container as a rehab project by “Ung Cancer” was great to see as well; a room to be used for reflection and rehabilitation. How nice to have this little personal space as a hide away when required; everyone needs a little bit of space once in a while.

Being here at the center is simply fantastic, it gives me peace of mind, being able to contribute to something which, I am sure, changes the world. It doesn’t matter how small or big, every initiative and every person which strives to make the world a better place is a hero and this place is full of heroes. I am so impressed and proud of everyone here. As last time my visit will be way to short but I promise to return and to continue to support in whatever way I and DHL Freight can.
