Volunteer blog: Week 2 by Marina

This Monday I helped Nicky with her below 8 class because some employees were ill. All of the children introduced themselves and then I read a story for them. At first I felt a bit nervous to read a story that I’d never heard before, on English for all of these children, but I really enjoyed it! Nicky translated to Xhosa so that all of the children could understand. After, I asked them questions about the story, and they were so eager to answer.

I’ve got an assignment to write a presentation of Great Corner, which was created partly to prevent the youth here in Langa from being involved with crime and violence. In the presentation I’m going to write short about every member, so this week I met five guys, 17-19 years old and I talked to them one at the time. We talked a little bit about their background story, their experience of crime and how they want to change the society in Langa and affect other youth to not be involved in crimes, drugs, violence, gangster groups etc. Also how PPG and the Great Corner had an impact on them. It was very intriguing to talk to them all.

Every year DHL have a global volunteer day and they send out their employees to do some work so this last Friday they helped us cleaning, painting and fixing stuff here at Project Playground. It was a very nice day and the people from DHL were very friendly and helpful.
