Project Playground

Project Playground is a non-profit organization aiming to improve the life opportunities of children and youth, founded in 2010 by Princess Sofia and Frida Vesterberg. The vision is a safe world where every child grows up with a belief in the future and the possibility to influence their own life. Therefore Project Playground works with inspiring, motivating and engaging children and youth to seize their inner strength and potential through organised social activities and sports with focus in the individual.

Project Playground operates in South Africa’s townships since 2010 and in Sweden with unaccompanied youth since 2016.

In South Africa all children and youth between 4-21 years of age, regardless of background and conditions, are welcome to join Project Playground for free after-school activities. The organization offers:

 Recreational activities e.g. soccer, music and dance  Support programs e.g. initiatives to prevent gangs, crime and violence  Day program for children and youth with disabilities offering e.g. work therapy and capacity training  Psychological support e.g. therapists and play therapy  Outside influence e.g. parental contact, home visits, cooperation with local authorities such as the social services and the police  Daily nutritious meals  Enriching and stimulating trips during weekends and holidays  Secure and loving staff acting as role models and mentors, who are there for the child regardless of the situation

A meaningful spare time builds self-esteem, ambition and power of action – tools to influence your own life. It realizes dreams, creates employment and role models. Only when you care about your own life and expect a bright future are you able to break destructive patterns and exclusion. This in turn creates ripple effects on the whole community.

How donations are used – examples from Project Playground’s operation in South Africa

 10 000 SEK covers soccer kits with ball, shoes and clothes for 100 children  With 25 000 SEK Project Playground can purchase toys, books, drawing material and other tools for 100 children lasting a whole year  With 50 000 SEK 200 children are able to have meals at Project Playground for an entire year  100 000 SEK allows 50 children to have a meaningful spare time and meals at Project Playground for an entire year
