Psoriasis not chronic?

New research shows that psoriasis might not be chronic. Professor Mona Ståhle at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm reveals groundbreaking insights concerning the development of the disease at the 4th World Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis conference. A fifteen year study of 750 patients shows that 10 percent healed, with only one flare that never returned.

The study also claims that up to twenty percent with psoriasis suffers from severe psoriasis which is twice the rate usually stated. The president of the Swedish Psoriasis Association, Tina Norgren, comments the new research and the Conference itself with enthusiasm;

- If its true that up to ten percent with psoriasis might not be chronic, its wonderful news. Though I must say that more research has to be done to make certain that the thesis holds, meaning no one has seen people live without flares the rest of their lives. This study expands over 15 years only, and is of course great news. Our organization will keep a close look at these facts for time to come. The theory that twenty percent suffers from severe psoriasis doesn't surprise me at all. The Conference is an awesome opportunity to discuss and learn about all this and I'm glad that Sweden is one of the nations that has come a long way fighting psoriasis and creating better health care for those suffering from psoriasis.

On the 8-11'th of July about 1000 scientist from all over the world gather at the Conference Hall Stockholm Waterfront deepening their skills and knowledge concerning psoriasis with 140 abstracts presented. The Conference is arranged by IFPA, The International Federation of Psoriasis Associations, for the fourth time, started in 2006. The umbrella organization consists of more than 50 members spread all over the world, now represented through their chairmen and presidents putting the patient perspective up front.

- Mona Ståhle is the advisory professor and medic of the Swedish Psoriasis Association, Psoriasisförbundet, and a skilled scientist that has received grants from our science funds during the years. Together with all the new treatments that are in pipeline this year and the coming, we might be standing on the threshold of a new era for people with psoriasis. The fact that the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden has decided to investigate the need for national guidelines for psoriasis care is the result of hard working advocacy and good science, says Tina Norgren, president of the Swedish Psoriasis Association.
