Establishment of Advanced Research Park to bring industrial innovation to central Taiwan

To assist industrial innovation in counties and municipalities of central Taiwan, develop the high-technology sector and cultivate top national talent, the ROC government has designated Zhongxing New Village of Nantou County as the site for an Advanced Research Park. A ceremony marking the establishment of a preparatory office for the project was held on November 21.

Premier Wu Den-yih said during his remarks while officiating at the dedication ceremony that the central government will invest NT$10.7 billion (US$331.3 million) between 2010 and 2019 in developing a Advanced Research Park to promote flexible reuse of government-owned land and bring about transitional growth to high value-added production by industries in central Taiwan. Integrating the project with the “eco-city” environment will create a high-technology research center compatible with the existing urban landscape and ecological quality.

According to a National Science Council assessment, the Advanced Research Park, once opened, will attract 7,500 researchers and potentially draw 250 companies. Investment of nearly NT$5 billion (US$154.8 million) annually in research and development can potentially generate direct or indirect industry-linked benefits valued at nearly NT$29.5 billion (US$913.3 million). Besides providing employment opportunities and promoting local economic growth, it will also attain preservation of cultural assets and the formation of an “eco-city.”
