Larsson with strong Sunday in Audi Sport TT Cup

  • Young Swede scores in second race at Circuit Park Zandvoort
  • Nicklas Nielsen and Sheldon van der Linde win in Audi one-make cup
  • Prince Bernhard van Oranje celebrates two podium places among guest entrants

Ingolstadt/Zandvoort, July 17, 2016 – A changeable weekend for Simon Larsson: following a retirement in race one due to an accident, the 19-year-old Swede responded with a strong performance in round two and scored important points for the overall classification.

Zandvoort is a fantastic circuit – and very demanding,” says Larsson. “I experienced a weekend with light and shade. The accident in race one was unfortunate. Actually, I’d started the weekend out well. In free practice, I tried out a new tire strategy and in eleventh place in qualifying I was separated from third by only one second. In race two, I managed an ending on a positive note,” he summarized the event. “Following my start from position twelve, I found myself losing a few positions. I had a lot of battles in midfield. In the end, I benefited from a fierce duel between my rivals and managed to bring home eleventh place.”

The victories on the 4.307-kilometer circuit in the dunes of Zandvoort were clinched by Nicklas Nielsen and Sheldon van der Linde. Both rookies won the rounds from pole position. In the guest entrants’ classification, the duel was billed as “nobility versus winter sports.” The Dutch Prince Bernhard van Oranje kept the upper hand in both races against the stars from the Audi FIS Ski World Cup, Adrien Théaux and Peter Fill. The aristocrat and co-owner of Circuit Park Zandvoort took second place in both rounds, trailing Formula One commentator Allard Kalff.

Dennis Marschall is leaving the Netherlands with 158 points as the overall leader. Simon Larsson, with 53 points, ranks in position 13. Following a brief summer break, the Audi Sport TT Cup will be visiting the Nürburgring. The fifth in a total of seven race weekends is scheduled from September 9 to 11 as part of the DTM’s supporting program.
