Contemporary circus and modern yoik – early autumn has begun

Funny circus acts consisting of everything from ping pong balls to hula hoops, plus modern interpretations of older yoiks. That was how the sixth Sami season of Umeå's European Capital of Culture year started.

About 2 000 people had sought out Broparken and the inauguration of the sixth Sami season of Umeå's European Capital of Culture year  – Tjakttjagiessie, the season of harvesting. The event was also the start of the Contemporary Circus Festival. The show started with Sami artists Katarina Barruk, Ante Kuoljok, Hilda Länsman and David Anoar Holmestrand and their modern interpretations of older yoik. The performance was a sample from the concert Wake Up The Yoik!, where about 20 young yoikers had gone off in the archives in search of hidden treasures, with support from older mentors.

The opening ceremony also consisted of a lot of contemporary circus of course: Performing artist and juggler Johan Wellton showed his reptilian reflexes when he amused the audience with his trickery. Award-winning cabaret and variety show La Soirée offered hula hoop tricks by Jess Love, ping pong ball artistry from David Eriksson and exciting acrobatics mixed with dry British humor by the English Gents.

Master of ceremonies was Fransesca Quartey, President and Artistic Director of Västerbottensteatern, and the opening speech was held by Marie-Louise Rönnmark, Mayor and Chairwoman of the Culture Committee in Umeå.
