Refused's final album recomposed for symphony orchestra

Shape in Shambles – A musical discordance for Refused and orchestra is performed by NorrlandsOperan’s Symphony Orchestra.

The Umeå hardcore punk band Refused were active in the 90s, during the peak of the straight edge movement. The band split up on tour in 1998, an event depicted in the movie Refused are Fucking Dead by Kristofer Steen. In 2012 the band reunited for a celebrated world tour, starting at Coachella, California and going out with a bang in Umeå in December that same year.

Taking his inspiration from their last album, the ground breaking The Shape of Punk to Come, the composer and conductor Jonas Nydesjö has reworked the material in collaboration with Refused drummer David Sandström. The new music is independent of the original while also being a tribute to the album.

NorrlandsOperan’s Symphony Orchestra will perform the concert twice at the MADE Festival, on May 8 and 9.

MADE is arranged by and at the NorrlandsOperan, the only Opera House in the north of Sweden. Across four stages during four days a wide spectrum of genres are performed through artists that feature  a progressive approach to their work. In addition to the stages, showrooms and foyers throughout the building, the city itself works as the festivals exploring playground. A programme consisting of seminars, international and local artists, local clubs, instant performances, body, sound, vision, music, bringing it beyond the expected. MADE brings tradition and provocation further through a fluidity and multitude of artistic expressions.

This year MADE also presents the world premiere of Saiyah by Yoko Seyama, Benjamin Stearn and Christian Karlsen, desert blues band Tinariwen, street-choreographer and poet Anne Nguyen, singer Julianna Barwick and many more.

The MADE festival is supported by Umeå 2014 – European Capital of Culture.
