2011-09-15 09:00 Swedish life science initiative Uppsala BIO has formed a strategic partnering agreement with Roche, for Uppsala BIO’s open innovation program, BIO-X. The BIO-X program identifies and supports ideas in the research community that can satisfy unmet medical needs or solve problems in healthcare, drug development, and diagnostics. The agreement is the first of its kind in Europe.

2011-05-11 12:15 This year’s recipients of the BIO-X award have presented proposals for innovations that can radically improve the situation of patients, the capacity of careproviders to offer better care, and to enable better use of patient samples. Three projects have been selected. BIO-X bridges the gap between academic research and industrial product development. This year’s theme is diagnostics

2011-05-11 12:15 When cancer patients are treated with certain chemotherapies, it can be difficult to give the proper dose. A patented method has been developed at Stockholm University for measuring the exposure to harmful chemicals. This method is now to be used to measure the effect on the individual patient of a drug (cyclophosphamide), which is used in treating breast cancer.

2011-05-11 12:15 A research team has found a marker in the blood that clearly shows whether the patient has an infection caused by bacteria. The discovery creates the conditions for a quick and reliable diagnostic test that distinguishes a bacterial infection from a virus infection. One benefit can be reduced unnecessary use of antibiotics.

2011-05-11 12:15 Biobanks are becoming an important resource in research and in treating individual patients. Patient samples are valuable resources that must be dealt with in a secure and efficient manner to provide material for as many studies as possible. The research team aims to develop a method for automatic extraction of DNA and RNA and to create a single flow of sample handling that can be quality assured.
