AI project awarded research grant

Dialect attribution takes place in the academic world as well as in the asylum procedure. Linguistic behavior may replace documents supporting a purported residential history. Because of the potentially dire consequences in the legal context, it is importance not to discard any tools available achieving reliability and accuracy.

Drawing both on novel machine learning techniques and good old expert system design, Verified is, with the kind funding of Tillväxtverket, bringing science from the lab to application. In academia as in the court room, the same data should ideally be evaluated the same way and yield the same outcome, at different times and when conferred to different scientist.

Having artificial intelligence addressing the relations between components of composite evidence, which is a part of the project, has wider application than dialect attribution. While immediately affecting the dialectology paradigm, the hope is for this AI solution, project Ilmarinen, to be put to use in, not least, other forensic domains.
