Viaplay’s hero set the new world record for binge-viewing – held out in 90 hours!

Erik Pettersson and Mascoll Silverstolpe beat the previous world record of 87 straight hours by continuously watching the action TV series 24.

On 5 May at 15:00 CET, a world record attempt begun with four people who set out to beat the previous record from Las Vegas of 87 straight hours, by watching the TV series 24. This morning at 9:00, Erik Pettersson had watched Viaplay for 90 straight hours and broken the record. Mascoll Silverstolpe did also beat the old record and held out for 87 hours and 17 minutes.

– It’s been great to follow the world record attempt live in the building and on Viaplay, and it’s wonderful that Viaplay’s hero actually pulled it off. Everyone has shown real commitment to the attempt, both externally and internally, and Kiefer Sutherland’s tweet made us all particularly happy, says Rikard Steiber, CEO of Viaplay and Chief Digital Officer at MTG.

– It’s been a real feat, harder than we ever imagined, but it’s also been great to really test our limits. That said, it will probably be a while before we get to watching the few remaining episodes, Erik Pettersson. Binge-viewing is a team sport and we are both winners.

The attempt has taken place at Viaplay’s headquarters in Stockholm, where the participants have knocked back 100 cups of coffee and watched 134 episodes. According to Guinness World Record’s rules, the participants have only been allowed one five minute break per hour, with the option of saving up their minutes for a longer consecutive break.

The world record attempt served as a kick-off for the brand new concept Viaplay Premiere, providing viewers with exclusive premieres on Viaplay.

The participants were:
Erik Pettersson
Mascoll Silverstolpe
Thobias Johansson (dropped out after 39 hours)
Aina Lesse (dropped out after 24 hours)

The entire attempt has been streamed live at viaplay.se/worldrecord24, and interaction with the participants have been possible under #worldrecord24.

Viaplay is available on PC, Mac, Android and iOS mobile phones, tablets, the Viaplay box, LG Smart TV, Samsung Smart TV, Philips Smart TV, Panasonic Smart TV, Xbox 360, PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®4.
