International meeting for better public services

The 9-10 of December, the Public Services Summit 2009 is being held in Stockholm. The theme for this year’s meeting is “Connect to the Future: Innovating in Challenging times”. Since 2002 the City of Stockholm and Cisco Systems co-operates in this annual meeting on how public sector uses ICT to improve the service to the citizens.

– We will continue to explore how technology can be used to improve living conditions for our citizens and how we can improve the prerequisites for business and investors. Today more than 30 e-services are available on www.stockholm.se that supports this development and more services are on their way, says Mayor Sten Nordin.

Sten Nordin opens the conference on the theme ”Stockholm – A Smart Sustainable City” reflecting the fact that Stockholm has received international recognition as ”Intelligent Community of the Year 2009” and as ”European Green Capital 2010”.

About 300 delegates from 40 countries are expected to participate. Stockholm has chosen to co-host this meeting to improve public sector services through the international expert knowledge exchange and to promote the city as Europe's leading knowledge-based capital.

The City of Stockholm is hosting two study tour programmes during the conference. One of the study tours goes to the ICT cluster Kista Science City and to Ross Tensta upper secondary school. The delegates will learn about the close cooperation between the business community, the city and the universities. They will also experience how Ross Tensta upper secondary school uses information and communication technology in education. The second study tour discusses the Stokab network, the world’s largest
open neutral fibre network, that enables Stockholm to provide green and inclusive IT-solutions for its citizens. The delegates will be able to try E-adept, a GPS navigation system for pedestrians with visual impairments.
