International call for anti-corruption focus answered by TEDxStockholm

When TED last week announced anti-corruption activist Charmian Gooch of Global Witness as winner of the TED Prize 2014, they also challenged TEDx organizations around the world to, at upcoming events, present other examples of anti-corruption work. One of the first to answer this call was TEDxStockholm who on Monday 24 March will present anti-corruption auditor Louise Brown as the opening speaker.

This at the TEDxStockholmSalon #2/2014 event taking place at Summit Grev Ture in Stockholm on Monday, 24 March, 17.30-20.30. For more info and tickets, please visit TEDxStockholm.com.

Louise Brown is author of the just-released book “The sanctimonious Swede - Corruption without consequences?”. When returning home after fifteen years work abroad, she found the Swedish attitude towards corruption sanctimonious and saw that as a clear call for a book that could unveil the truth about one of the world´s least corrupt countries. In her talk, she will share her thoughts about Swedes sometimes sanctimonious attitude towards corruption.

The other speakers are Teo Härén, one of the most requested experts on creativity in Sweden and one of the first in the world to organize a TEDx event who will do a talk named “Peak-City” about how urbanization will peak within the next 10 years and David Phillips, one of the leading Swedish figure-head in the art of making presentations who will talk about “How to avoid Death by Powerpoint”. The singer Mimi Oh will perform live. Stage host is Ulrika Nandra, journalist, who received a lot of attention some years ago for an article about sex trafficking of young women and children in Mumbai that resulted in the Indian embassy blacklisting her indefinitely.

The TED Talk “My wish: To launch a new era of openness in business”, performed by the TED Prize 2014 winner Charmian Gooch and recorded at TED 2014 this week, will also be shown. Charmian Gooch co-founded watchdog NGO Global Witness in 1993, an organization who since then have captured headlines for their exposé of “blood diamonds” in Uganda, minerals in the Congo, illegal timber trade between Cambodia and Thailand and more.

We believe Stockholm is blessed with a strong creative and innovative mindset - the Stockholm mindset. However, we thought the city were lacking an interdisciplinary and open forum where people could meet and “ideas worth spreading” could evolve. TEDxStockholm was our way of creating such a forum and spreading this insight.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a conference in California 1984, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives.

At a TED conference, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. TED speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

On TED.com, talks from TED conferences are shared with the world for free as TED Talks videos. A new TED Talk is posted every weekday. Through the Open Translation Project, TED Talks are subtitled by volunteers worldwide. Through our distribution networks, TED Talks are shared on TV, radio, Netflix and many websites.

The TEDx initiative grants free licenses to people around the world to organize TED-style events in their communities with TED Talks and live speakers. Selected talks from these events are also turned into TED Talks videos.

The annual TED Prize grants $1 million to an exceptional individual with a wish to change the world. The TED Fellows program helps world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. TED-Ed creates short video lessons by pairing master teachers with animators, for use in classroom instruction or independent learning.
