This social design intervention hosted in collaboration with Masibambisane Secondary School in Delft took place in Cape Town, 16 - 26 April 2013. Challenge participants included the 10 Fresh Talents, 6 Delft youth and 3 Swedish Design Ambassadors, who were set to task to design and implement solutions to improve the lives of the Delft youth, centered around the school - in just 10days!
Shift awards its 2012-2013 Fresh Talent winners. Cape Town – The winners of the 2012-2013 Fresh Talent Sustainable Design Competition, hosted by Shift were announced at the Sustainable Design Awards, at City Hall Cape Town on Friday, 26 April, 2013. Shift is a South African NPO that empowers youth through practical skills transfer for social, environmental and economic sustainability.
Today, 31 October 2012 – Shift announced the sixteen finalist concepts for this year’s Fresh Talent Sustainable Design Competition. Shift is a Non Profit Organisation that aims to raise awareness amongst young South Africans about the role that design can play in developing practical and sustainable solutions to every day challenges.
The competition is our main platform to showcase examples of sustainable design and how small things can make a BIG difference. This call to action challenges creatives to think beyond beauty and functionality and consider how design can influence significant positive change to local and global communities and natural environments.
The Sunshine Cinema can go anywhere, everywhere. It aims to fuse storytelling, as an indigenous means of knowledge transfer, and the power of contemporary media – short form documentaries and ‘DIY’ films, to transfer practical, indigenous solutions to a range of health, environmental and social issues. It promises to "share innovations that uplift, educate and inspire, powered by the African sun!"
Showcasing the designs and concept prototypes of the 2011-2012 winners and multi-media stories of the finalists’ journey into sustainable design through their participation in Shift’s educational exchange program, the exhibition also offers the opportunity to view global examples of sustainable design curated with INDEX: Design to Improve Life®.
Janine Johnston, CEO of Shift said: “In a very short existence (officially registered in December 2010) the Eco Design Initiative has successfully created a number of projects to meet our aim of promoting sustainable design. Now is the time to rebrand and align all our activities succinctly to that brand.”
Young learners at Skumlandela Primary School in Khayelitsha are actively involved in the planning and preparation of the social design action that's to take place in Cape Town in March 2012 as part of the Eco Design Initiative. Armed with specially designed investigative tool-kits, the young learners have been documenting information about their lives at home, school and in their communities.

South African design and creative youth are invited to submit proposals for products, systems and services in response to the competition brief, Small Change; A World of Difference. This call to action challenges the creative community to suggest ways in which seemingly small shifts and improvements can influence significant positive change to local and global communities and natural environments.
The Eco Design Initiative promotes sustainable design as the precursor to social, environmental and economic well-being. Activities are hosted as a skills and culture exchange between young designers in Sweden and South Africa and are arranged to respond to 3 key themes: EDUCATE / EXCHANGE / EXHIBIT
