Oscar Wilde's much-loved comedy will be transformed into an opera at Vadstena Castle, Sweden.

In summer 2017, Oscar Wilde's much-loved comedy The Importance of Being Earnest will be transformed into an opera at Vadstena Castle, Sweden. In recent years, composer and conductor B Tommy Andersson has enjoyed major international acclaim for his expressive and virtuosic music. As an Englishman, librettist and director William Relton has strong ties with Oscar Wilde the playwright and with this play in particular. Young talented singers will be joined by Royal Court Appointed Singer Ingrid Tobiasson in the role of the imposing and just a little scary Lady Bracknell.

The set and costume designer is Marika Feinsilber and Anna Wemmert is the lighting designer.

The Importance of Being Earnest is Vadstena Academy’s 36th commissioned work since the Academy began in 1964. The first ever performance of this opera will take place on 21 July 2017 at Vadstena Castle. The production also constitutes a period of intensive learning for young singers, musicians, stage technicians and administrators participating in the Academy. The Importance of Being Earnest will be sung in English with Swedish surtitles and will be playing until 9 August. Tickets will be on sale from 1 April 2017.
