Venture capital and the Healthcare Industry

A+ Science

It was Monday March 21 when SwedenBIO, for the 6th consecutive year, stood host for its Life Science Investment Day Scandinavia. The most interesting part of the meeting was undoubtedly all the investors gathered in one place.  Notable was also a clear spoken strategy among investors: many prefered to co-invest in order to minimize the refinancing risk and to secure a steadier cash flow.

I wonder when we will see similar tendencies among Biotech companies: co-researching with their competition.  In fact PWC recently presented a report identifying what they believe life science companies can do to better cope with the challenges of today’s life Science industry. Sharing knowledge could be one way forward when funding is scarce, an idea that also has the potential to decrease research costs and shorten development timelines.

For all of you not attending the Life Science investment day, below is a list of some of the investors. Martin Heidecker with Boehringer Ingelheim venture funds mentioned they review about 500 companies each year of which one or two receives funding. In other words, the competition is still fierce. Before you contact and pitch an Investor, listening to David S Rose talking to a TED audience on pitching to VCs might be beneficial.

God luck and contact A+ Science when you are about to enter the clinical phase.
