ECCO Sko A/S has opened its first factory in China

- ECCO continues to go its own ways maintaining ownership of and expanding own value chain
After a ceremony rich in tradition, ECCOs first Chinese factory has now been opened in dynamic growth centre Xiamen and production is running.
This way, ECCO has taken the first step into China by means of a state-of-the-art production plant that was ready on time for production following 8 months successful construction process.
- We have made thorough preparations and have had a positive co-operation with the Chinese authori-ties. Therefore, we are pleased that the factory was ready on time and that production can commence according to schedule, says Mikael Thinghuus (COO).
After a running-in period, 650 Chinese employees will be making up to 1 million pairs of shoes annu-ally in the high-tech factory. Further production capacity must be ensured in four completely identical factory units that will be built next to this first one. Three production units in all are expected to be ready by the end of 2006.
The increased production is intended as a support to ECCOs planned global growth in the years to come.
- In a competitive market, we create results through our active and deliberate choices. Whereas several competitors phase out and outsource production, we at ECCO maintain that our core is our own plants responsible for the main part of the production. We use all ECCOs competences when over the next 5 years we will invest up to 3-500 million DKK in five Chinese factory units and a tannery, which will be the backbone of our growth towards 2013, says Mikael Thinghuus.
