Anthony Schoofs awarded with the prestigious Globe Sustainability Research Award 2011

STOCKHOLM, March 28, 2011. Anthony Schoofs is acknowledged as the recipient of the Globe Sustainability Research Award 2011 for the most original and challenging research within the sustainability field.

The goal of the Sustainability Research Award is to discover and recognize researchers which contribute to advancing knowledge on sustainability. The general mission of the Globe Sustainability Awards is to highlight and acknowledge particular cases and initiatives within the sustainability field.

“The Globe sustainability research award is presented to Anthony Schoofs from Ireland for exceptional work which is both unique and practical. This research has demonstrated clear gains in all three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. It is well developed and implemented, resulting in improved energy efficiency in commercial buildings, through better analysis and the accounting of how electricity is actually used.”, the jury states in its motivation.

The jury group for the Globe Award’s Sustainability Research Award is chaired by Professor Mohan Munasinghe, Chairman, Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND), Sri Lanka Professor of Sustainable Development, University of Manchester, UK Shared the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace (as Vice Chair, UN IPCC)

“Anthony Schoofs fully deserves the Globe sustainability research award for his outstanding contributions, which result in improved energy efficiency in commercial buildings, through better analysis and accounting of how electricity is actually used. The work is both original and practical. I am especially pleased that it is an excellent application of the Sustainomics framework, showing how individuals and companies can and must act now, to make development more sustainable. The research yields significant benefits with respect to all three aspects of the sustainable development triangle – economic, social and environmental. It shows how we can indeed make the planet a better and safer place for future generations, by working together.

A close runner-up was Oxis Energy Limited, who also demonstrated their capabilities with a fine piece of sustainability research involving the development of a novel re-chargeable battery.", says Professor Mohan Munasinghe, jury Chairman.

The applications for the Globe Sustainable Research Award were sent from three continents. After fruitful discussions the jury chose six nominees: Anthony Schoofs from Ireland, Dubai Municipality from United Arab Emirates, Prof. Göran Broman and Prof. Karl-Henrik Robèrt from Sweden, Oxis Energy Limited from UK, Renewable Communities from USA and Prof. Zhifeng Yang from China. It was however Anthony Schoofs which had impressed the jury the most with his unique work showcasing great understanding of improving sustainability in the world.

The prize ceremony will be held virtually at the Globe Forum sustainability conference in Stockholm on May 11^th. The winner and the jury will present the winning project. There will be an online chat after the prize ceremony so anyone who wishes can put forward questions directly to the laureates.

About the Anthony Schoofs’ project:

The research has shown that the power contribution of individual appliances can be extracted from a building's power load captured with a single meter, via intelligent pattern recognition technique, or via combination with other sources of information such, as machines' activity onto local area networks indicating power consumers at a given time. Anthony Schoofs’ work has been implemented and tested into multiple pilot sites, ranging from hotels to hospitals, and is in the process of commercialisation.
