Globe Award 2009: Five prominent researchers nominated for the Globe Sustainability Research Award 2009

Five prominent researchers have been nominated for the Globe Sustainability Research Award 2009. The Research Award, one of four categories of Globe Award 2009, is given for original research which successfully contributes to increased knowledge on sustainability. One finalist will be presented June 3rd, and awarded by H.R.H. Swedish Crown Princess Victoria, at the Winter Garden of Grand Hotel in Stockholm.

The goal of the Globe Award, this year presented for the third time, is to discover and encourage researchers, innovators, cities and companies prominent in sustainable development. Globe Award's mission is to highlight and reward good cases and initiatives within sustainability.

The jury consists of highly experienced and internationally recognized experts. Chairman of the jury group for the best Sustainable Research is Mohan Munasinghe, 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and Vice Chairman of thee United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

- The Globe Sustainability Research Award is a premier prize that recognizes innovative and outstanding contributions to advance the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, says Mohan Munasinghe.

The jury has been working with five criteria to evaluate the nominees. Is the research original? Is the research practical - has it been implemented or can it be implemented easily? Has the research led to any economic gains to society? Does the research encourage and advance protection of the environment? What are the broader social impacts and benefits, and how does the research help society specifically in developing countries?

Dr. Candice Stevens, Sustainable Development Advisor at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
PhD Susanne Arvidsson, School of Economics and Management, Lund, Sweden.
Bengt Sture Ershag, Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB. Gothenburg, Sweden.
Lisbeth Segerlund, Stockholm University, Department of Economic History, Section of International Relations. Stockholm, Sweden.

The nominees for the Globe Sustainability Research Award:

Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) - The Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) has developed a light source which runs on locally produced fuel, is environmentally friendly and produces bright light equivalent to that from a 100 W electric bulb. This lantern also doubles up as a cooking stove thereby solving the twin problem of cooking and lighting for rural households. NARI is the first anywhere to propose and develop a dual purpose lantern running on 55-60% ethanol-water mixture. Based in Maharashtra, India

Dr. Candice Stevens, Sustainable Development Advisor at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) - Dr. Stevens has extensively researched governance practices for sustainable development, identifying good practices in National Sustainable Development Strategies and approaches for Institutionalising Sustainable Development. Based in Paris, France.

PhD Susanne Arvidsson, School of Economics and Management, Lund - This comprehensive research project is focusing on how companies work with Environmental, Social and Ethical responsibility and corporate Governance issues, how they communicate their achievements to stakeholders and how these issues can be worked more efficiently on. Based in Lund, Sweden.

Bengt Sture Ershag, Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB - The Innovation is called Carbonizing by Forced Convection and is a result of 15 years research by Bengt Sture Ershag. The research as resulted in a technology that thermally breaks down any organic material in a controllable environmental friendly closed system. The result is that we, for example can take worn out tires and produce high quality products (Carbon Black, oil, steel and gas) in a controlled, environmental friendly, profitable and energy efficient process. Based in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Lisbeth Segerlund, Stockholm University, Dept. of Economic History, Section of International Relations: The research that Segerlund has conducted concerns the development of corporate social responsibility understood as a new international norm and how this norm has become an issue on the international agenda. Based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr. Mona Makram-Ebeid - Former member of the Egyptian Parliament and Professor of Political Science at the American University, Cairo, Egypt.
Fred Dubee - UN Global Compact, Senior Advisor working extensively in China and throughout Asia.
Tommy Borglund, head of CSR services at Hallvarsson & Halvarsson, Sweden.
