Globe Award 2009: The City of Cardiff receives an Honorary Award in the Globe Sustainable City Award 2009

2009-06-04 00:28STOCKHOLM, JUNE 3, 2009 - The City of Cardiff, capital of Wales in the United Kingdom, has been awarded an Honorary Award in the Globe Sustainable City Award for 2009. The award was presented to Cardiff by H.R.H Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden at an award ceremony in the Winter Garden of Grand Hotel in Stockholm on June 3rd. The City of Cardiff was represented by Councillor Margaret Jones, Member for Environment of Cardiff Council's Executive Committee.
The Globe Sustainable City Award focuses on a holistic approach on Sustainability in cities and integrates different types of resources or capital's for a better future in cities around the world. The Globe Sustainable City Award is a new category presented for the first time this year.
"The Globe Award hereby presents an honorary award to Cardiff for their efforts in creating a sustainable city. The city of Cardiff has shown a deep understanding of the importance of moving towards a knowledge based economy within a holistic perspective on sustainability. Cardiff demonstrates practices of a sustainable city with highly creative services and innovation. It is clearly shown that sustainable development and economical development go hand in hand in Cardiff", says Jan Sturesson, Chairman of the jury for the Globe Sustainable City Award.
"The Sustainable City Globe Award is a huge honour that reflects exceptionally well on everything being done in Cardiff and in particular the immense success of what's been achieved in our city's Bay area. It proves we are helping to lead the way in sustainability, not just in Europe, but right across the globe... We now look forward to continuing that success in the years to come", says Councillor Margaret Jones.
The jury group was chaired by Jan Sturesson, Partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers and Global Leader of Government and Public Service. Jury members were Her Excellency Ms. Najia Al-Awadhi, Member of Parliament, Federal National Council, United Arab Emirates; Kerstin Lindberg Göransson, Director Luftfartsverket, Arlanda Airport, Sweden; Lawrence Bloom, Deputy Chairman of Noble Cities Plc. Chairs the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Urban Management and the UN Environmental Programme Green Economy Initiative sector on Green Cities, Buildings and Transport.
A total of four jury groups, each with highly experienced and internationally recognized experts, has ensured that the most innovative and visionary innovators, scientists, cities and companies are highlighted. The Globe Award jury is chaired by Lars-Olle Larsson, Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers Sweden.
