SILMO 2011: AN UPBEAT EDITION

As the expression goes, the "business climate" lived up to the summery temperatures and four days of bright sunshine.

In an 80,000m2 exhibition area, the thousand brands and businesses taking part, which included 120 new companies, welcomed 34,671 professionals, an increase of 5% on 2010. Of these, 56% of visitors were from abroad, a rise of 5% on last year and 44% were French opticians, up by 4.7%....significant figures illustrating the importance of SILMO on the major international trade show circuit and an excellent note on which to launch preparations for next year’s exhibition, scheduled for 4 to 7 October 2012

SILMO 2011, A HOST OF EVENTS WITHIN THE EVENT

As in previous years, the organisers put together a programme of information and events complementing an impressive roster of exhibitors from sectors including sunglasses and optical frames, lenses, contact lenses, technological equipment and store design and layout.

SILMO ACADEMY

The second edition of SILMO ACADEMY, a science symposium intended for optics professionals wishing to enhance their knowledge, drew a great deal of interest.

Over the course of the 2-day symposium (29 and 30 September), an audience of more than 300 followed presentations by some twenty speakers, including scientists, opticians, researchers and academics. Focusing on the themes of children’s vision, reading and myopia, SILMO ACADEMY concluded with a plenary session summarising the proceedings which will be made available in the near future.

Chaired by Guy CHARLOT, SILMO ACADEMY comprises a scientific committee, whose role is to validate the content of symposia and is responsible for the scientific range of the lectures.

The committee is chaired by Professor Yves Pouliquen, member of the Académie Française, accompanied by Mr Bernard Maitenaz, inventor of the Varilux lens, Professor Jean-Claude Hache, Ophthalmologist in Lille and director of the scientific symposium, Professor Christian Corbe, senior health inspector, Mrs Elaine Grisdale from the Association of British Dispensing Opticians together with Jean Paul Roosen, lecturer and Mr Gilles Bourdeau, optician practising in Lyon.

MERCHANSIDING WORKSHOP

As an external communication medium, window display is an important issue for opticians who were quick to take full advantage of the “merchandising” training offered by the exhibition. Going beyond window display itself, store design and layout requires skills that need to be continually enhanced and updated.

The Merchandising Workshop is a forum for information and instruction, complemented by bespoke coaching by appointment and a keynote address. This year’s event opened up new opportunities for all the professionals present, who attended the various interventions on offer in large numbers.

SILMO D’OR 2011 AWARDS

A smooth landing for the 18th SILMO d’OR awards ceremony, which was held on Thursday 29 September in the Le Bourget Air Museum. After exploring the museum’s historic aircraft collection, the guests took their seats for the official presentation of awards under the impressive wingspan of two Concorde planes.

Master of ceremonies, Philippe LAFONT, SILMO president, accompanied by Isabel BEUZEN, the exhibition’s communications manager, welcomed Gabriele PEZZINI, a renowned designer from Italy and this year’s president of the Grand Jury.

Declaring himself very honoured to be present, Gabriele PEZZINI praised the jury’s level of expertise, together with its commitment and objective approach, highlighting the importance of an evaluation which combines aesthetics and production, and facilitates everyday use by the wearer.  "Our deliberations also focused on what I call the "slow innovation", which constitutes an evolutionary approach based on the long-term that pays attention to detail and focuses on the purity of lines and harmony of materials, he added. …With the priority objective being, of course, absolute quality, which is the one and only true differentiation factor in such competitive markets.”

MO by SILMO TRENDS

Seeking to bring a fresh new approach to the new season’s trends and make them more easily accessible during and after the exhibition, this year’s SILMO unveiled its original digital magazine, MO by SILMO, which could be viewed on a giant screen at the entrance to hall 6.

Visitors were able to interact virtually with the trends which this year focused on Hypno’chic, a harmony of lines showcased in different style trends (Soft Touch, Mix & Match, Glitter for Ever, Color Block, Brit’Effect) combining elegance with embellishment, and simplicity with sophistication.

These trends will be showcased once again in a second edition of MO by SILMO which will be online on the exhibition website during November: silmoparis.com.

To complement this unusual information tool, a daily digital magazine was also available, featuring all the news from the exhibition.
