Technia Innovation Forum 2007 - The largest PLM-meeting in the Nordic
Technia
2007-11-19 10:00The PLM industry is more mature today. A clear sign of this is that industries beyond traditional manufacturing industries are becoming more interested in using PLM as a tool. The new interested parties are construction businesses, metal manufacturers and global fashion/sportswear companies.
Accordingly, keynote speakers were Mr. Klaus Glatz, CIO, Andritz AG, Austria, Mr. Wesley Reinsch, PLM Soultion Architect, GAP, USA, and Mr. Jon Taylor, Global PLM Manager, Trek Bicycles, USA. Other speakers were the Gucci Group and Haglöfs. Companies that showed their solutions at the Innovation Forum were Trek Bicycles (USA), Nokia (Finland) and Ericsson and Autoliv from Sweden.
Klaus Glatz from Andritz AG spoke about the usage of Matrix for a collaborative engineering based company and highlighted how we need a system, which allows users to connect different CAD tools and one interface into SAP in order to have an integrated CAD process.
“The forum was a very good meeting with valuable information and was held at a very nice location. The possibility to share and exchange experiences was very good. The question of the future of PLM in our industry segment is very important. Separation between engineering based data and logistical/finance data is needed. Additionally, user interface and integrations have to be improved”, comments Klaus Glatz.
Wesley Reinsch from GAP told the audience how GAP’s PLM system has enabled them to make the product development and sourcing process more efficient, that it is all about the ability to deliver the right products, at the right time, to the right customers. Furthermore, Wesley Reinsch highlighted how important it is that the users really “like” the system.
The title of Johnny Claus’, Product Director at Haglöfs, presentation was “The Future of the Outdoor Equipment Business and PLM”.
“My main message was that one needs PLM in order to be able to compete in the future. At the same time I wanted to underline the flexibility of MatrixOne, that it is possible to focus your PLM solution on the parts that give the most short-term benefits, for example process management and product data, as in our case. Also, how it is relatively easy to apply new functionalities later on. The presentations within Apparel were well carried out and entertaining. I think there was a good selection of companies- from GAP to the Gucci Group. You really realised what great possibilities PLM offers”, says Johnny Claus.
According to Jonas Gejer, Vice President at Technia AB, the PLM related issues are in more focus on top management level in the largest Nordic enterprises. The CEOs are more involved in the decision-making processes since they understand that PLM is a strategic and important solution for their business. They have noticed that other companies have implemented PLM and they do not want to fall behind. PLM has gone from “nice to have” to “a must have” and all PLM solutions that are implemented today are SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) based.
Another trend in the PLM industry discussed in the forum is that the standard (out of the box) solutions are implemented with minimal configurations. Companies are able to implement a PLM solution in a few months today, something which could take years earlier. The PLM vendors are better on estimating the projects now, and therefore they are able to deliver according to the time plan. Earlier the PLM vendors put more focus on implementing the system platform, but they forgot making the system easy to use.
– The PLM industry is consolidating. The growth among the leading PLM vendors are considerably larger than among smaller PLM niche vendors. The customers choose vendors that dominate the market and the ones that they know will remain in the market over the next couple of years. Technia has also noticed that the interest in working with PLM has increased. A lot of professionals are interested in applying to Technia, and we have space for more. Technia is in an expansion phase and is looking for another 30 PLM consultants to recruit, explains Jonas Gejer.
