The Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Gaza Doctor Izzeldin Abuelaish´s first visit in Sweden 20-26th of February

Dr Abuelaish worked for many years in an Israeli hospital, becoming a living symbol of the possibilities of Israeli-Palestinian peace. During the 2008–2009 Israeli military

assault onGaza, he sought to give Israelis an alternative view on the conflict through live broadcasts from his home in the Jabalia refugee camp. He gained international prominence with a broadcast on Israeli television immediately after his three daughters and a niece were killed in shelling.  Since then, ‘the Gaza Doctor’ has become one of the foremost voices for peace in theMiddle East.

Izzeldin Abuelaish has received numerous awards for his work for peace. His 2010 book “I shall not hate: A Gaza Doctor´s Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity” became an international bestseller and has been translated into 15 languages. In 2010 Dr Abuelaish founded Daughters for Life, providing academic scholarships to young Middle Eastern women.

Dr Abuelaish’s first visit to Sweden is organized by Dr Johan Sundelöf of Uppsala University, founder of the non-profit organization Peace in the Present and co-author with Dr Abuelaish of a forthcoming book about the driving forces of peace.

During the visit Dr Abuelaish will give two public lectures:

24/2 kl 13.00 at the Swedish Peace Institute S.I.P.R.I

In addition Dr Abuelaish will participate in meetings with scientists, staff members at Dep. of Foreign Affairs, members of the Swedish Parlament, Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation as well as national and local media.

The visit is sponsored by Hotel Villa Anna, Lindahls Advokatbyrå, Uppsala Chamber of Commerce andUppsala Network for young leaders and Folke Bernadotte Academy.

Peace in the Present

Peace in the Present is a Swedish/Global non profit organization founded in 2012 by Johan and Erik Sundelöf with the aim to inspire people globally to choose non-violent approaches in conflicts between people, populations or nations. Peace in the Present is about presenting the alternative to violence. Peace in the Present´s message is about how can we make it possible for people to choose non-violent strategies in conflicts.  Three terms define Peace in the Present; “peaceful co-existence”, “sustainability” and “peace in mind”.

An important first initiative for Peace in the Present has been to develop a global web based forum for dialogue between people around the world on peaceful strategies in conflicts www.peaceinthepresent.com which will be released in mid February. The main focus for “Peace in the Present” is to try to inspire people to contribute on the website by telling their story, Pace in the Present encourage people to contribute in order to make it possible to identify key factors which will decide whether or not peaceful strategies in conflicts will work.

Peace in the Present encourages people to analyze their own situation carefully so that a strategic plan for their non violent struggle can be set in their specific region. The approach for doing that is by defining key questions that any non-violent organization need to bee able to adress as if not it is very likely that the non-violent approach will not be efficient.  This is done by the following instruction:

“Considering where you live, what is needed for you to choose a sustainable, non-violent path for progress or change? The main focus should be on a path forward and how that could be conducted. The focus should be less about who is right or wrong in the moment, but rather how a non-violent future can be accomplished.

You can either write a blog post with a featured image of your choice or take a short video. The video does not be edited or sophisticated. It can simple be a webcam capture of you talking about the topic.
