Road safety conference in Rio de Janeiro

Pressmeddelande   •   Maj 16, 2016 13:00 CEST

The 17th RS5C (Road Safety on Five Continents) conference will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, May 17-19th 2016.

RS5C is an international conference aiming at increasing road safety globally by providing a platform for this essential knowledge exchange and helping the participating countries to find a good balance between road safety and mobility.

Road traffic injuries and loss of life is one of the major global health problems today with 1.24 million people killed annually, i.e. one person every 25 seconds is killed in a road crash.

Many countries have learnt to mitigate the problems associated with road traffic crashes but there is still much more to be done. Estimates indicate that, unless action is taken over the next 15 years, the number of annual fatalities in road crashes may rise to 2.4 million, with the increase occurring in low and middle income countries.

There is a great necessity for global cooperation to stop the growth of traffic fatalities. To reverse this trend, knowledge, information and experience from success stories and good practice must be shared. Road Safety on Five Continents (RS5C) is an international conference aiming at increasing road safety globally by providing a platform for this essential knowledge exchange and helping the participating countries to find a good balance between road safety and mobility.

The 17th RS5C conference is organised by VTI in close cooperation with The Brazilian National Association for Transportation Research and Education (ANPET).

More than 100 presentations on road safety from more than 25 countries are represented at the conference.

Originally “Road Safety on Two Continents” the conference had an emphasis on two continents, Europe and North America, to bring together road safety researchers. Conferences were held in Europe between 1987 and 1999 and then expanded to three continents in 2000 when the conference moved to South Africa. A fourth continent, Asia, was added in 2007 when the conference was hosted in Thailand. In 2016 the conference is expanded to Brazil, South America, and is now called "Road Safety on Five Continents".
