What is the Difference between Luxurious Resilient Flooring (LURF) and Laminate Flooring?

Here’s a table we’ve created to help you navigate your way through the different flooring options, using our Luxurious Resilient Flooring (LURF) and Laminate flooring solutions from Quick-Step as examples.

Do note that other flooring brands may not have the same features:

Characteristic Luxurious Resilient Flooring (LURF) Laminate
Flooring
Material Mostly Plastic (PVC).
Flooring from Quick-Step has an additional glass fibre stabilising layer, making LURF the most stable vinyl flooring on the market.
The core layer is made of High Density Fibre (HDF) board that comprises refined wood fibres and melamine resin.
Thickness Thickness of between 4.5 – 5mm, depending on product range. Although it is thinner, the softer material does make walking on it more comfortable. Thickness of 7- 8mm, depending on product range. Because it is thicker, some people may feel that this helps make it more comfortable to walk on.
Water resistance Because it does not contain any organic processed material, LURF is 100% waterproof. While tiles are more popular in Asian kitchens where dry and wet areas are combined, the waterproof nature of LURF means it can replace tiles in high moisture areas such as kitchens, utility areas and services yard. Although it has superior protective coatings on top of the HDF core layer as well as very strong joints, the laminate floor plank is still a little susceptible to moisture because of the wood material content. Daily mopping and spills that are wiped off quickly are alright though.
However, Quick-Step does have a laminate flooring range, Impressive, which uses a special HydroSeal technology that makes it the most water-resistant laminate flooring ever made - it can withstand water spills for as long as 24 hours.
Resistance to wear and tear Generally, vinyl floors have comparable wear resistance and durability with laminate; the differences are in the levels of technology utilised. LURF’s Quick-Step resilient flooring has Scratch Guard and Stain Guard protective coating technology that exceed European norm requirements for CEN resistance testing standards Laminate floors generally have similar wear resistance and durability with vinyl, so you’ll have to check what special features, if any, the different brands offer.

Quick-Step’s laminate flooring utilises Scratch Guard protective coating technology that makes it 10 times more durable than normal laminate flooring.

Printed and surface decorative effects Decorative fine-printed vinyl film. Generally, vinyl floors in the market are considered less beautiful. That’s why Quick-Step has taken care to use advanced textural surface coating to increase the authentic look and feel of its wood and stone designs. Similar image design layer. But laminate flooring has had a few years' head start over LURF in terms of introducing features such as deeper embossing, better imaging, etc. For example, apart from wood and stone designs, you also have leather fabric options
Cost Varies with brands.
LURF products from Quick-Step are a little costlier compared to laminate but that’s mainly because of its advance technology and features.
Varies with brands.
Laminate flooring solutions from Quick-Step are generally a little more affordable compared to LURF.
