Scoot to Sydney!

Press Releases   •   Dec 01, 2011 11:04 SGT

1 December 2011, Singapore – Sydney rolled out the red carpet today to welcome Scoot's revelation that the city will be the airline's inaugural destination when it starts flying in mid-2012.

The announcement, by the Premier of New South Wales accompanied by the State's Minister of Transport, the CEOs of Tourism Australia, Destination New South Wales, Sydney Airport Corporation and Scoot, was made at a rooftop venue overlooking the city's iconic Circular Quay, Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

"Scoot's decision to fly its first service between Sydney and Singapore from mid-2012 is fantastic news," said Barry O'Farrell, Premier of New South Wales. "This is a great win for Sydney and travellers in the Asia Pacific region, opening up Australia's premier city to new aviation routes and lower-cost carriers. This is a significant step towards our goal of doubling tourism expenditure by 2020, placing Sydney front and centre of the boom in budget travel in emerging markets like Singapore, China and India."

"Scoot is absolutely delighted that Sydney, one of the world's great cities, will be our inaugural destination. And as the first true no-frills airline operating nonstop daily between Sydney and Asia, we can't wait to bring a whole new style of travel, even better airfares and our unique attitude – our Scootitude – to shake things up. Sydney, here we come! "said Campbell Wilson, Scoot's CEO.

Adhering to the low-frills model, Scoot will offer great value airfares and empower guests to customize their travel, to select only those elements they desire and not subsidize the choices of others.

Not your usual airline name, not your usual airline

Press Releases   •   Nov 01, 2011 11:16 SGT

Clearly not your usual airline name… and the company it identifies won’t be your usual airline.

“We chose the name ‘Scoot’ for many reasons, not least because it‘s different. Rather than the tried and tired “airlines” this, “airways” that or “air” yawn, it’s short, sharp and snappy. It stands out. It’s geographically independent, and can be a verb or a noun. Besides difference, it conveys spontaneity, movement, informality and a touch of quirkiness—all attributes we intend this Company to be known for,” said Scoot CEO Campbell Wilson.

“These attributes will be personified in a unique spirit that encapsulates our values and style, and that should be apparent to guests whenever they interact with us. An airline with a different attitude. People with a different attitude. Scootitude.”

Starting in mid-2012 with a fleet of four B777-200 aircraft purchased from parent company, Singapore Airlines (SIA), Scoot will offer no-frills service on medium to long haul routes to and from Singapore. It is managed and run independently from SIA, and already operates from separate offices.

Adhering to the low-frills spirit that has proven so popular in short haul arenas in Asia and around the world, Scoot will offer great value airfares up to 40% less than legacy carriers. Guests will be empowered to customize their travel to suit their personal requirements, partaking of only those elements they want and not subsidizing the choices of others. Meals, preferred seats and baggage, amongst many other items, will all be available for selection.

Scoot, which will operate from Changi Airport Terminal 2, will offer two cabins. Specific seats, cabin features and offerings are currently being evaluated.

The Airline’s first-year destinations will include Australasia, China and others – some routes being completely new, others new to no-frills airline operations. The specific cities will be progressively announced over the coming months as negotiations with airports and tourism bodies progress. Flights will open for booking in the early part of 2012.

Thereafter, as the fleet expands and longer-range aircraft are inducted, Scoot’s geographic footprint will steadily grow to encompass India, Europe and other markets at a later stage such as Africa and the Middle East.

The Airline is working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore for its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC), and is proceeding on track for award around the end of the first quarter of 2012. Engineering retrofit and certification of aircraft is scheduled for April-June, and the first commercial flights are targeted for the middle of the year. Recruitment is well under way for administrative staff and pilots, and will commence in earnest for cabin crew in early 2012 with a public campaign.

“The team building Scoot is passionate about this new airline, what it stands for and how it can change the way people travel long distance,” said Wilson. “We’re equally passionate about incorporating Scootitude into all that we do. It promises to be a fun and exciting ride.”

Scoot takes off with Sparkfury and Tangoshark

Press Releases   •   Nov 01, 2011 11:12 SGT

The covers are off, revealing Sparkfury and its sister interactive agency, Tangoshark, as the Agencies on Record for Scoot, Singapore’s new medium and long haul low cost airline.

Selected through a pitch involving agencies big and small, this eight-year-old Singapore firm impressed Scoot’s evaluation panel with a proposal that conveyed the upbeat, fun, leisure-oriented and slightly quirky approach the Airline will take.

The light, bright logo conveys warmth, energy and informality, while the tilted “t” of the name Scoot hints that this Airline is not cut from the same conformist mould of others. Space remains for a tagline, which will be selected with public involvement in the months to come.

The aircraft livery, with its waves and colour, likewise gives a sense of motion, happiness, lightheartedness and youth, reflecting a casual, leisure-oriented vibe that should capture and enhance the mood of those travelling.

“The guys and girls from Sparkfury and Tangoshark captured the essence of our brand from the getgo, and were not afraid to challenge convention and be different. That’s exactly the spirit we like and want of our partners and our staff—an attitude that’s unique, the Scootitude that encapsulates our values and spirit and that should be apparent to guests whenever they interact with us,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO of Scoot.

“Getting the opportunity to develop a brand for an airline named Scoot is a creative person’s dream,” said Michael Lim, Executive Director of Sparkfury and Tangoshark. “It’s so different from a traditional airline name, and lends itself to so many applications. We wanted to reflect this difference and unconventionality during the pitch process, and to create a brand that changes the way people view travel. Our whole team is energised and excited with this assignment and, like Scoot itself, aims to demonstrate something different, something unique in all we do.”

The aircraft type was selected following a detailed evaluation. Aircraft will initially be acquired from parent company Singapore Airlines and reconfigured in a new seating layout.

The B777-200’s proven versatility and reliability are key deciding factors in the selection of the aircraft. The B777 family of aircraft has been a mainstay of the Singapore Airlines fleet since its introduction in 1997.

SIA to establish new subsidiary airline

Press Releases   •   May 25, 2011 11:30 SGT

Singapore Airlines has today announced its intention to establish a new no-frills, low-fare airline operating widebody aircraft on medium and long-haul routes.

The new airline is being established following extensive review and analysis. It will enable the SIA Group to serve a largely untapped new market and cater to the growing demand among consumers for low-fare travel.

Operations are expected to begin within one year. The airline will be wholly owned by Singapore Airlines, but will be operated independently and managed separately from SIA.

“We are very excited about what our new low-fare subsidiary will offer to consumers. We are seeing a new market segment being created and this will provide another growth opportunity for the SIA Group,” said SIA CEO Mr Goh Choon Phong.

“As we have observed on short-haul routes within Asia, low-fare airlines help stimulate demand for travel, and we expect this will also prove true for longer flights.”

Mr Goh added: “At the same time we remain fully committed to the further growth of SIA, which will continue to offer the highest-quality products and services to our customers.”

More details will be announced by the new airline’s management team in due course, including its branding, products and services, and route network.
