Crazy Rich Asians: The Rise of the Super-Rich in Singapore, India and Beyond
We are pleased to invite you to an evening seminar about “Crazy Rich Asians: The Rise of the Super-Rich in Singapore, India and Beyond” with Mr James Crabtree on Tuesday 20th November at the Norwegian Ambassador’s residence.
Mr Crabtree will delve deeper into the blockbuster movie Crazy Rich Asians. The movie showcases Asia’s riches nation, Singapore, and has won the audience over with its portrayal of Asia’s nouveau riche. What is even more interesting are the underlying core topics of the film such as; cultural significance, the wealth shift from west to east, racial politics, the growth gap between the rich and the poor, and the tension between western and eastern values.
Furthermore, Mr Crabtree will present his newly published book The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India’s New Gilded Age.
About The Billionaire Raj
A colorful and revealing portrait of the rise of India’s new billionaire class in a radically unequal society. India is the world’s largest democracy, with more than one billion people and an economy expanding faster than China’s. But the rewards of this growth have been far from evenly shared, and the top 1% of the country’s population now hold nearly 60% of its wealth. In megacities like Mumbai, where half the population live in slums, the extraordinary riches of India’s new dynasties echo the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers of America’s Gilded Age, funnelling profits from huge conglomerates into lifestyles of conspicuous consumption.
James Crabtree is a writer, journalist and author living in Singapore. He is currently an associate professor of practice at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, and a senior fellow at the school’s Centre on Asia and Globalisation. His first book, The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India’s New Gilded Age, was published in mid-2018.
