Banyan Tree Phuket, the flagship property of Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts, was a winner of two Green UK Travel Awards at the recent World Travel Market 2011 conference held in London. Presented by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in conjunction with Responsible Travel, the UKs most trusted ethical travel company, Banyan Tree garnered the Best Large Hotel and Best Overall Winner awards.

Presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana of Thailand, the awards highlight and promote Thailand’s dedication to the conservation of its country’s precious natural and cultural resources and support sustainable tourism development.

Justin Purves, Banyan Tree’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Europe, accepted the awards on behalf of Mr. Ho KwonPing, the company’s Executive Chairman and Founder.

“This is a huge honour for Banyan Tree Phuket. The resort and company as a whole work tirelessly on various CSR initiatives and to be recognised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Responsible Travel is a huge tribute. Banyan Tree Phuket has exceeded its target of planting 10,000 trees by more than 2,000 as part of its ‘greening communities’ reforestation project. Furthermore, we funded the repair of boats for local fishermen after the tsunami and support the needs of 150 community members with the purchase of a Braille embosser, amongst other initiatives,” states Mr. Purves.

Located on the shores of Bang Tao Bay in northwest Phuket, Thailand, the 173-villa Banyan Tree Phuket has recently been upgraded and launched three unique accommodation categories within the resort including DoublePool Villas by Banyan Tree, Banyan Tree Spa Sanctuary and Banyan Tree Phuket.

Justin Francis, Managing Director of Responsible Travel and organiser of the Thailand Green UK Travel Awards, said of the judging process, “Banyan Tree Phuket offers an impressive scale and range of achievement in both environmental conservation and community engagement.”
