The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) worked closely together in a socio-civic programme codenamed Surya Bhaskara Jaya (SBJ), from 11 Oct to 17 Oct 2011 in Pulau Belitung, Indonesia.
About 200 RSN personnel joined the TNI AL to provide social assistance, primary health and dental care to the residents of the island. As part of the programme, surgeries were performed on board the RSN's Landing Ship Tank RSS Endurance and the TNI AL's hospital ship, KRI Suharso. In addition, the RSN personnel distributed essential food items comprising rice, sugar, salt and cooking oil, as well as educational materials to the Belitung residents, and worked together with personnel from the TNI AL to carry out repair and restoration works in the villages.
The RSN has been taking part in SBJ since it was first invited by the TNI AL to join the humanitarian assistance programme in 1997. The RSN's participation highlights the excellent ties between the two navies. Both navies also engage in regular professional exchanges and long-standing bilateral exercises.
