Knowledge, communication and networking can prevent infections

Press Release  •  May 29, 2012 21:36 SGT

Infections that occurs when patients are in hospitals can be prevented by using the knowledge of infection hygiene at all levels within the health care organization.
– But it requires a formal collaboration between the municipality/hospital and an intersectional health organization, says health nurse Bente Bloch, Master of Public Health at the Nordic School of Public Health Health NHV.

Patient care in hospitals is done in a high tempo and includes complicated treatments, a highly specialized care which often continues after leaving hospital.
– Infections that is spread on hospitals (nosokomiella) can be prevented, when it comes to patients who change treatment units, if the knowledge of infection hygiene is increased at all levels and if a formal cross-sectoral cooperation is established, says Bente Bloch.
Her master's study Intersectoral collaboration surrounding patients in need of infection control measures –how do we do it? demonstrates the need for more knowledge on all levels. Formal partnerships must also be established so that the municipality, and nearby hospitals, receive a hygiene work that rests on an intersectional basis.
The purpose of Bloch's master work was to study collaboration across sectors within the Danish health care organizations, and how cross-sectorial cooperation in relation to the patient/citizen works in order to prevent infections.
The result shows that there were a number of motivating factors for intersectional collaboration. The requirements is organizational structure, the amount of networking but also the recognition of the need for clear communication paths and also focus on the knowledge of infection hygiene.
This calls for a structured cooperation between municipalities and hospitals and the establishment of a health organization between the sectors. The staff needs access to expert knowledge if the work against infections shall be satisfactory.
– Motivation to work with infectious hygiene of action is essential, says Bente Bloch.
