Serial Thief Arrested

Police have arrested a 55-year-old Chinese man who is believed to be involved in several cases of theft in the Jurong East housing estate.

Since late May 2011, Police received several reports of theft in the said housing estate where items including cash and personal documents amounting to about $500 were stolen from victims who had left their valuables unattended.

Following the reports, officers from Clementi Police Division conducted intensive enquiries and managed to obtain CCTV footage of the suspect. With this lead, officers mounted several ambushes in various locations in a bid to apprehend the suspect. The officers’ efforts finally paid off when they spotted the suspect at the vicinity of Jurong East Street 21 on 12 June 2011 at about 5.50am, and placed him under arrest. Upon conducting a search, cash of about $1,200 and a bag of personal belongings were also recovered from the suspect's possession. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had stolen the said items from the void deck of Blk 231 Jurong East Street 21, prior to his arrest.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 13 June 2011 for the offence of Theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 which carries a maximum jail term of three years imprisonment, or with fine or both.

Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Melvin Yong, commended the officers for their perseverance and good investigative follow-up leading to the successful arrest of the suspect.  DAC Yong also advised members of public to safeguard their personal belongings and not to leave their valuables unattended.
