Thai Airways International Showcases at World Travel Market 2011

Thai Airways International (THAI) is having an even bigger presence at London’s World Travel Market (WTM) this year as befits an airline that has recently won a clutch of awards and announced unprecedented investment plans to further enhance customer satisfaction.

An attractive and spacious THAI booth, with six sample retrofitted economy seats for the public to try, provides for a meet-and-mingle point for both the public and media to learn more about the airline’s exemplary service and innovations, as well as its crop of new awards.

Between November 7th and 10th THAI is joining more than 5,000 exhibitors from over 189 countries and regions worldwide at the ExCel Centre. This is one of the most important global industry gatherings providing a host of enlightening talks and events highlighting industry innovation and providing a cutting-edge insight into where the aviation and tourism industries are heading.   

The new economy class seat on display includes individual in-seat audio/video system which is currently being retrofitted on the Boeing 747-400 and 777-200 fleet. The first retrofitted 747-400 will be introduced on the twice daily London-Bangkok service on December 1, 2011 and the second one will come on line on Dec 15. The new seat will provide enhanced comfort to economy class travellers, expanding on the already highly appreciated extensive seat pitch by adding individual state-of-the-art audio/video systems. Passengers in all classes will also enjoy an even more comprehensive in-flight entertainment choice, as the content will be increased from 48 to 100 movies, from 45 to 150 TV features and short documentaries, from 80 to 500 music CDs, 17 music channels in addition to passenger information such as airport and destination-related information.   

2011 is a hugely important year for THAI as it marks the beginning of one of the most dynamic periods of expansion and innovation. Over the next six years a massive fleet expansion and upgrading will take place including delivery of up to 63 new jetliners of the latest and most fuel-efficient types – Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus A330-300 and six super jumbos A380-800. The first A380 is scheduled to enter service on THAI´s major intercontinental routes in January 2013. THAI has recently joined forces with Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to co-brand a bus advert on one of the major London bus route until January 2012. The joint venture has been designed to promote Thailand , as a tourist destination, and the award-winning Thai Airways experience.  

At the 2011 Skytrax World Airline Awards, the airline was honoured in two categories, winning the title of Best Airline Economy Class Onboard Catering and also picking up the title for Best Airline Economy Class seat. THAI was also placed 5th worldwide in the 2011 World’s Best Airlines category, moving up from 9th place last year. In 2011 the airline was also named Second Best Airline in the coveted Business Traveller Asia-Pacific Travel Awards 2011 poll.  

Britain counts among THAI´s core markets with around 820,000 British travellers having visited Thailand in 2010. Thai Airways International operates double daily non-stop flights from London to Bangkok, with daily departures at 1150 hours, arriving at 0610 hours the following day; and at 2135 hours arriving in Bangkok at 1555 hours the following day. Flight time between London and Bangkok is 11 hours and 20 minutes. The airline covers over 70 destinations in 35 countries, across five continents. From Bangkok, passengers can travel throughout South-East Asia, Japan, China , Indochina and onwards to Australasia with regular services to Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland, New Zealand. Its domestic routes cover 30 destinations within Thailand .

THAI together with the Team Thailand, including Royal Thai Embassy, Tourism Authority of Thailand and representatives of Thailand’s travel agents and hotel operators in the tourism industry, is taking take its presence at the World Travel Market 2011 to assure travel to Thailand and inform passengers that Suvarnabhumi Airport is not affected by the current flooding situation and THAI still operates normal flight schedule at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

 Finally, as if all the above is not enough news for one year, THAI will also be spreading the word about its new business unit, THAI Smile Air, scheduled to begin its first internal domestic flights in July 2012 from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Chiang Rai, and Surat Thani. By 2013, THAI Smile Air’s fleet of 11 brand new lean 174-seat Airbus A320 planes are expected to fly to neighboring countries—India, China, and most ASEAN member states of Southeast Asia—thereby making these regional destinations that much more accessible.   Responding to the high demand for more price-sensitive segment in short sectors, THAI Smile Air will be a “light premium” sub-brand of Thai Airways International.
