The Dheva Spa and Wellness Centre at Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, Chiang Mai has been honoured as one of the finest spas in the Asia-Pacific region, winning Best Resort Spa and Best Signature Treatment for its Lanna Signature Ceremony in The Crystal Awards Asia Pacific 2011.
The Dheva Spa and Wellness Centre vied for the auspicious titles among a top notch field of 150 applicants from around the region. Through a judging process that looks at merits and actual performance from the guest’s perspective, this was narrowed down to a nominees’ list of 86 entrants, representing almost 40 brands. The winners of the 18 categories featured in the awards were named on a spectacular gala evening at The Forbidden City by IndoChine at Clarke Quay in Singapore, held in conjunction with the Wellness Summit.
It was a night on which the Mandarin Oriental star shone the brightest of all. As well as the Best Resort Spa and Best Signature Treatment titles going to Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, Chiang Mai’s The Dheva Spa and Wellness Centre, the titles of Best Hotel Spa went to Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo and Best Wellness & Spa Group to (for the third year running) Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. The four awards were the most to be won by any single brand.
“This is tremendous recognition for the simply stunning world-class destination spa that is The Dheva Spa and Wellness Centre. Truly outstanding both in its facilities and staff who are trained to the highest levels of professionalism, The Dheva Spa and Wellness Centre having been presented with such benchmark awards is a wonderful achievement all of us are extremely proud of” said Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, Chiang Mai’s general manager Greg Liddell.
At a palatial 3,100 square metres and modeled after a 19th Century Mandalay palace, The Dheva Spa and Wellness Centre is a destination spa and retreat built on the foundations of wellness. Guests enjoy impeccable service and a range of treatments drawn from three continents, their origins spanning 4,000 years. The Lanna Signature Ceremony is based on the healing traditions and practices of the ancient Lanna kingdom of northern Thailand, and includes the Tok Sen (Lanna Massage) that is rarely practiced today.
In delivering health and wellbeing benefits, the spa’s signature treatment also tells the story of how people in times of old released tension after long days working in the rice fields. The Lanna Signature Ceremony involves the body being tapped rhythmically with a special stick made from tamarind bark, a warm compress and oil massage, fragrant steam bath with wild forest honey and body scrub enriched with northern Thai herbs and the serving of colour tea based on a guest’s body type identified in the personal assessment that takes place before the treatment begins.
In its eighth year, The Crystal Awards Asia Pacific is recognized as the most prestigious endorsement of excellence in the spa and wellness industry. Held annually, it is organized by Global Ratings & Audit Solutions (GRAS) and along with celebrating the industry’s finest, it aims to educate spa consumers on the level of service and quality they can expect from spa and wellness establishments. Winners are chosen based on the contributions they have made to enhance the industry, spearhead trends and change as well as to exert an overall definition for the future direction of the industry.
