Aesthetic clinics in Singapore are seeing an increase in the number of men seeking treatments to improve their physical appearance. The convenience of undergoing non-surgical aesthetic treatments has made even the most discrete men consider these treatments to maintain their youthful look. Compared to 10 years ago, the number of men seeking non-surgical treatments have increased by leaps and bounds.
Although cosmetic treatments are very similar for both men and women, there are significant differences between treatments for both genders. While features like a V-shaped face, arched eyebrows and full cheeks make a woman look more feminine and youthful, the same features will make a man look feminine and less attractive.
Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics tell us more about the top 4 areas that can enhance a man's physical appearance.
Contouring of the lower face
A strong, defined jawline makes a man look masculine, attractive and youthful. Unfortunately, we lose our jawline contours with age. Skin sagging creates jowls, while fat accumulation under the chin produces an unsightly double chin.
To improve the jawline, a combination approach is necessary, with Radiesse fillers and Ultherapy.
Ultherapy helps to tighten skin and lift the jowls, while burning away excess fat in the double chin through the use of micro-focused ultrasound treatments to stimulate collagen. I always combine Ultherapy with Radiesse filler – a semi permanent filler which stimulates collagen once it is injected under the skin. Radiesse improves the jawline by allowing doctors to add definition and sculpt a new, masculine and attractive jawline.
Radiesse can also be administered into the chin to complete the enhancement of the lower face. Asian men often have a "weak chin" which is too short and receded. In men, a square, broad and projected chin is attractive and masculine.
Projection of the mid-face
Women are not the only ones who desire strong cheekbones. With the right contouring, strong cheekbones are attractive and masculine. As we age, sagging cheeks make a man look tired and old. They also create nasolabial folds next to the mouth, adding to the impression of tiredness. For this reason, lifting sagging cheeks is often one of the most important things to visibly improve a man's appearance. Thread lift and Ellanse fillers are great treatments to address sagging cheeks.
A non-surgical facelift can be achieved with suspension threads. There are many types available, such as silhouette soft and Happy Lift, and the Korean PDO thread lifts. A combination of threads is sometimes needed to achieve the best cheek lift.
The male beauty enhancement is completed with the injection of sculpting fillers such as Ellanse, a semi-permanent filler which lasts 2 -3 years. The emphasis is not to create the feminine “apple cheeks”, but to strengthen the cheekbones, and to replace lost cheek volume. A skilled doctor is required to do this properly.
Removal of eyebags
Eyebags make a man look tired and old. Hence, eyebag removal treatment is one of the most common requests I receive in my clinic. The undereye area is extremely delicate, requiring a combination of treatments to improve. Tightening lasers are needed to improve fine lines and sagging skin. This is followed by hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane Vital to fill in aging defects and hydrate the skin, and Ultherapy high intensity focused ultrasound treatment to melt excess fat in the eyebags.
Eyebag reduction is one of the most challenging areas. Many things can go wrong, and hence a careful, stepwise approach is necessary.
Asian men often have a problem with a flat nose, and rounded nose tip. Hence, nose augmentation is one of the most common requests doctors get from their male clients. Non-surgically, we can use fillers and nose thread lifts to improve nose bridge height, and even reshape the nose to make the nose tip look smaller.
Traditionally, fillers were used very often to enhance the nose. However, too much is often injected to make the nose look broad and unnatural- the “Avatar nose” (named after the blue aliens in the movie). Hence, a combination approach is sometimes required. Using fillers and nose threads, it is possible to achieve better and more natural results.
It is important to emphasize that nose augmentation is one of the most dangerous aesthetic medical procedures. Blindness can occur in untrained hands. Hence. Always have an extensive conversation an experienced doctor before undergoing the procedure.
Medical aesthetic treatments have come a long way for men. There are many options now available. With improved techniques using a combination approach, we can not only restore the youthfulness of a man, but also enhance a man’s facial features to make him look more attractive, and masculine.
