Press Release: Singapore Polytechnic students and DAW International bring augmented reality experience to Clarke Quay and Funan DigitaLife Mall this Earth Hour

Go on a journey using augmented reality and learn how to save the environment at Clarke Quay and Funan DigitaLife Mall this Earth Hour (23 March 2013).  In a collaboration involving students from Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology and DAW International, ‘I Play Green, and You?’ is an augmented reality programme where shoppers at Clarke Quay and Funan DigitaLife Mall can pick up green tips.  Augmented reality is an up and coming technology used in many fields, including gaming, allowing users to view the actual physical world around them with additional augmented elements such as graphics.

iPhone and Android users just need to download the LAYAR augmented reality application from their application store and scan the QR codes at Clarke Quay and Funan DigitaLife Mall.  They can then start searching for CapitaFrogs at Clarke Quay’s Central Fountain Square and Funan’s Level 1 Atrium via their smart phone.  Each mall has 10 hidden CapitaFrogs, each with a sustainability tip.  The first 20 shoppers in each mall to email a screen grab with a CapitaFrog will be rewarded with $50 in vouchers.  Shoppers will be able to find the CapitaFrogs from 23 March till 30 April 2013.

Director of Digital Art Weeks Singapore, Prof Arthur Clay, explains, “The Earth Hour project ‘I Play Green, and You?’ is the preview to the “Window Views & Zoos” augmented reality exhibition coming this May to Singapore as part of the ETH’s Digital Art Weeks Festival.  While at the same time going beyond the single initiative of switching lights off for an hour, ‘I Play Green, and You?’ emphasises the importance of participating in Earth Hour and educates us on how to save energy all year round and make a difference for a lifetime.”

“We are happy to partner with Clarke Quay and Funan DigitaLife Mall and ETH to raise awareness for Earth Hour by tapping on the power of digital technology.  The interactive virtual exhibition is a good platform for Singapore Polytechnic students to showcase their creativity and sharpen their technical skills, while contributing to the green cause,” said Ms Georgina Phua, Director, School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology at Singapore Polytechnic.

Mr Billy Chua, General Manager, Clarke Quay and Funan DigitaLife Mall, said, “We hope shoppers will find this a fun and engaging way to learn about sustainability at our malls.  We look forward to future collaborations to further engage and interact with our shoppers through such technology.”
