Painterly strokes and flamboyant florals

Impasto is the stunning new collection from Harlequin, launched in August 2012. Dramatic, uninhibited and vibrant, Impasto has been inspired by the free, painterly style and light-reflecting techniques of the Impressionist movement: its prints and weaves are breathtaking in their liberated designs and intensity of colour.

To achieve such a strikingly individual, artistic effect, each design has been hand-painted, drawing heavily on rich painterly textures and colours. The collection name Impasto comes from a technique used by the Impressionists, who expressed themselves in their art-work through the use of very thickly applied paint, usually so thick that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible.

This technique has been beautifully and sympathetically interpreted onto shimmering silks, cottons and sumptuous eye-catching velvets and weaves. Burgeoning florals, abundant blooms, abstract geometrics, ombré stripes and graceful hummingbirds come together in this thought-provoking, eye-pleasing, sensory delight of a collection.

Some designs have been digitally printed, to enable every brushstroke and colour (64 colours in the case of one fabric!) to be captured, further enhancing the feel of these hand-painted original designs. Each one truly is a work of art in its own right!

The powerful colour palette ranges from inky blues and vibrant turquoises to moody greys, sultry charcoals and magnificent tones of pinks. The individual colour palette ombrés through from intense tones to soft powdery blush shades. Every colourway seems to contain its own enigmatic charm, mystery and drama.
