Lighting Up The Future With GLitters Of Litter

The GLitter of Litter Chandelier – G.O.H. Dr Maliki Osman shares on the importance of spreading the message on recycling and upcycling.

HSL unveils giant artwork from used materials

Singapore, 17 July 2014 – As part of HSL’s efforts to promote the message of environment care — Waste No Waste — through recycling and upcycling, its CSR committee recently completed an innovative project involving used-plastic bottles and 96 staff across two months.

Minister of State for Defence and National Development, Dr Maliki Osman, today unveiled, installed and commissioned the GLitter of Litter Chandelier at HSL’s new waterfont HQ in Penjuru Road.

The upcycling project comprised 4,200 used-bottles cut into continuous curly strips, and together with used bicycle rims, made up an artistic light structure measuring about 4 metres in height and 3.5 metres in diameter. Used-bottles are usually treated as waste or litter, but have now been upcycled into a glittery chandelier, hence the GLitter of Litter Chandelier.

“This glittering work of art, made from used bottles and bicycle rims, is extraordinary.  These non-degradable used materials that make up the chandelier, have been given a new lease of life but in a different form,” said Dr Maliki Osman. “More importantly, it contributes towards the reduction of waste.  I must commend HSL’s CSR committee for coming up with the simple yet succinct slogan of — Waste No Waste.”

G.O.H. Dr Maliki receives from Chairman Mr Lim Choo Leng HSL's donation of 15k SGD for the Siglap CC Golf Fundraising Tournament.

Dr Maliki added: “Innovation is key.  So is communication.  And with innovative communication, messages tend to get across more palatably and effectively.  We, as corporates, government, groups or individuals, must find ways to be creative in driving across important socio-economic issues which have widespread and long-term effects.”

CEO Charles Quek welcomes Guest-of-Honour Dr Maliki Osman at the HSL Waterfront HQ @ Penjuru together with Director of Philanthropy and Sustainability Hassan Ahmad and Chairman Mr Lim Choo Leng.

The idea of the chandelier was first triggered by Mr Kenny Eng and Mr Khor Tuck Kuan from Gardenasia. The latter works with intellectually-challenged youths who are trained to be art instructors.

Mr Daniel Ong, Chairman of HSL’s CSR Committee, said: “Beyond the sense of achievement, this light structure gives our HSL family a common voice that will serve to exemplify our belief in sustainability and, hopefully light the future for many others to follow suit.”
