What is happening in Indonesia and Myanmar, and how do developments in these countries affect opportunities for Norwegian business?

Welcome to our annual policy brief, where Norway’s ambassadors in Jakarta and Yangon, as well as the Chairman of Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board, will candidly share their assessments of the developments in these fast growing economies.

Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world, strong economic growth and a reform-minded president. The country is a maritime nation with considerable oil and gas resources, in addition to ambitions within aquaculture industries. There is great potential for Norwegian businesses, but at the same time, the market can be challenging. What is going on in President Jokowi’s Indonesia – and how does it affect Norwegian companies’ opportunity to do business there?

In Myanmar, the new government has great ambitions for progress in the peace process and continued democratic reforms. The government is continuing the work to build a more open economy, and creating a basis for development and economic growth from the country’s rich natural resources. Telenor and other companies are already contributing to the development of Myanmar – what possibilities exists for other Norwegian companies?

Speakers

Thomas Lembong is the Chairman of Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), he thereby also ranks as minister. Prior to this, he was Indonesian Minister of Trade. His long career within finance includes among many positions; co-founder of Quvat Management Pte Ltd. He is educated at the University of Harvard, and was elected as Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2008.

Stig Traavik has served as Norway’s ambassador to Indonesia, East Timor and ASEAN since 2012. He has served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for many years, including as chief of staff to the Mister of Environment and International Development. He has previously been posted to Afghanistan, Switzerland, and Nigeria. Traavik holds an MA in Political Science from the University of Oslo.

Tone Tinnes has been Norway’s ambassador to Myanmar since September this year. Previously, she has been ambassador in South-Sudan. She has served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for many years, including in positions where she was responsible for clean energy development and support for commercial development in the Global South. Tinnes’ academic background is within economy, and she started her career in the Ministry of Trade and Industry. She has previously been posted to Tanzania.
