Press release -

OTTs as revenue opportunity for Telcos – Malaysia well positioned to establish a working co-opetition model

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia / Singapore, 14 October 2014 Embracing the rise of smartphone penetration, the world’s first completely free and truly mobile call app - nanu, urges telcos to collaborate through a mutually beneficial revenue model.

According to Visiongain’s recent report, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Market Forecast 2014-2019, while mVoIP has successfully provided free over-the-top (OTT) services to the global market—with even more advanced engagement predicted for the future—VoIP operators have not seen such a dramatic change in their number of subscriptions. The evolution of the telecommunications industry has put mobile operators and OTT providers in direct competition with each other.

Malaysia is one of the key markets of mVoIP growth in Asia Pacific with a smartphone penetration of 80%, only second to Hong Kong and Singapore at 87 percent[1]. Moreover, Malaysian telcos are already adapting their business strategies to extract revenue from OTTs by offering users unlimited packages devoted to certain free call and messaging apps.

“Instead of looking at the communication industry as a fierce competition, we would like to engage with telcos to work together and answer the demand of constant connectivity, especially in developing markets. OTTs and telcos are extremely close to a point of collaboration and cooperation to bridge these needs,” Martin Nygate, CEO and Co-Founder of Gentay Communications, the company behind nanu, shared.

As an experienced entrepreneur and innovator, Martin will be in Malaysia on 15 October 2014 sharing how telcos and OTTs can take the lead in the technology and communications industries to provide key steps in developing this type of business model at Malaysia’s Monetising Digital & OTT Services Asia 2014.

Since its been launch in August 2014, nanu has been successfully providing millions of free calls to users all over the world, and has shown exponential growth, specifically in developing markets such as India and Brazil – and with Malaysia also being in their global top 10. nanu is expected to change the landscape of VoIP[2], as it enables users to make clear calls in 2G environments at no cost.
